A warm welcome in the heart of Whitfield
Push open our door on a cold Northumberland evening and you'll feel it straightaway. The heat from the log fire reaches out to meet you. Voices hum low and friendly across the bar. The smell of a proper home-cooked meal drifts from the kitchen.
This is The Elks Head, a traditional country pub tucked into the picturesque village of Whitfield, deep in the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. And you're welcome here.
Since June 2026
Our story
In June 2026, Richie and Paul reopened The Elks Head. What they took on was more than a pub. It was a chance to build something that mattered to this village and the people who call it home.
The journey since then has been an incredible one. Piece by piece, they've shaped The Elks Head into a true community local. A place where regulars know your name, where visitors become friends, and where the door is always open to walkers coming down off the fells with mud on their boots and a thirst worth quenching.
They've worked to create an atmosphere that feels inviting, welcoming, and genuinely cosy. Not staged. Not polished until it loses its soul. Just warm, honest, and real.

Sports area
For those who like a bit of friendly competition, we've created a dedicated sports area. Rack up a game on the pool table or test your aim on the omni darts board. It's the kind of corner where an evening slips away before you notice.
Restaurant & function room
We've also refurbished our large restaurant and function room, ready to host your bigger moments. Whether you're gathering a large group for a celebration, a family meal, or a special event, we've got the space and the welcome to match.
Shooting season
When the shooting season arrives, The Elks Head comes alive in its own way. We're proud to host gun teams from around the world, welcoming them to our tables and our village with the same warmth we offer everyone who walks through the door.
